The Hype of New Year Resolutions

From January Motivation to June “Who Cares?”

Ah, New Year’s resolutions; the annual tradition of convincing ourselves that this year, we’ll become the best version of ourselves. Come January 1st, we’re pumped, writing ambitious lists: hit the gym, save money, eat healthy, learn a new skill, and maybe even run a marathon. By June? Let’s be honest, most of us are out here eating chips and binge watching Netflix while the gym membership silently expires.

It all starts with the hype. January feels like a clean slate, a chance to rewrite the story of your life. You buy a fancy journal (because writing your goals in a cheap notebook isn’t motivational enough) and Google things like “How to be productive in 2025.” You’re unstoppable, hitting the gym every morning at 6 a.m., meal prepping salads, and convincing your friends to join you on your “new me” journey.

Then February rolls around. The 6 a.m. workouts turn into “maybe tomorrow,” and the salads are replaced with quick visits to the roadside smokie guy. But hey, you’re still motivated, kind of. March? That’s when reality hits. The goals seem less exciting, and the excuses start rolling in: “Life is busy,” “I’ll start again next Monday,” or the classic, “At least I tried.”

By the time June comes, the journal is gathering dust. The hype has officially faded, leaving behind a faint memory of the “new you” that never fully arrived.

But here’s the thing, it’s okay! New Year resolutions don’t have to be all or nothing. Start small, give yourself grace, and remember that every day is a chance to reset. You don’t need January 1st to make a change. So, go ahead, dust off that journal, eat your chips guilt-free, and tackle your goals one step at a time. 😊
