The Silent Struggles
Transitioning from the safety of a children’s home to the wider society is a journey fraught with challenges for many Kenyan teens. For years, these homes offer shelter, routine, and a sense of belonging. But when the time comes to leave, the world outside often feels intimidating and unforgiving.
One of the biggest challenges is lack of support systems. Unlike peers who have families to lean on, these teens often face the world alone. They must navigate complex societal expectations without the safety net of parental guidance. This isolation can be emotionally overwhelming, leading to feelings of abandonment and self-doubt.
Financial instability is yet another hurdle. Without steady income or job opportunities, many teens struggle to secure housing, education, or even basic needs. Society’s stigma only makes things worse, with some labeling them as “troubled” or incapable of fitting in.
The emotional toll is heavy, with many battling identity crises. Having grown up in institutions, they often grapple with questions like, “Where do I truly belong?” This lack of rootedness can hinder their ability to form meaningful relationships and integrate seamlessly into communities.
To change this narrative, we must offer more than just resources. Mentorship programs, skill-building workshops, and community acceptance can empower these young people to thrive.
Their journey is tough, but with collective support, they can turn their struggles into stories of resilience. Let’s not let them walk alone.
