Sam’s Lesson
Sam was a hustler from Nairobi, always confident he had life under control. Though he’d say a quick prayer each day asking for guidance, Sam mostly liked following his own ideas. One morning, he got the chance to help out at his auntie’s popular roadside nyama choma joint. His main task? Handle the charcoal grill and prepare nyama choma, a Kenyan favorite.
A small voice inside whispered, “Sam, ask Auntie how it’s done.” But Sam shrugged it off. “God, I’ve seen this done a thousand times. I’ve got this!” With a grin, he piled on charcoal, set it ablaze, and tossed meat onto the grill.
But Sam didn’t consider the wind, which blew sparks all over the place, setting a pile of serviettes on fire. Soon, smoke filled the air, and the meat was burning faster than he could flip it. Auntie ran over, waving her hands, “Sam! What are you doing?” Customers were coughing, and the smell was…well, smoky and definitely not appetizing.
Embarrassed, Sam looked skyward. “Alright, God, maybe a bit of help?” The voice calmly replied, “Step one: ask Auntie.”
She quickly showed him the right way: balance the charcoal, keep the meat at a distance, and always watch the wind. As he followed her instructions, the nyama choma turned out perfect. Sam chuckled, realizing God’s way (and Auntie’s advice) led to a lot less smoke…and more customers. From then on, he knew not to ignore that inner voice, no matter how trivial.
We all experience times when we ask for God’s guidance. Then, we completely ignore him when he gives us instructions.
